Unable to Set Default Printer Solution:

Sometimes we face lot of issues while installing a new printer whether it is wired printer or wireless printer so here we are going to discuss some basic easy steps to resolve your printer issues

First we need to diagnose the issue to identify if error related with hardware or software. In case of software issue we can check driver, printer related services and security firewalls. To fix any software related check print spooler services, dependency services. Try to add a new printer driver. If problem still same then uninstall the older version and install the latest version of the driver from manufactures website. Some time it might be possible that we can’t print from any particular application that time we need to check application settings for that printer.

But if the problem is only regarding setting up a default printer then this article will help you. Please follow the instructions shown below.

After installed printer driver if you are unable to set that printer as default then you need to check the following registry setting.

Open “RUN” windows and type “regedit” command and click OK to open registry editor. Navigate the registry subkey HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\

And search the key “Device” in right panel; change the value as per your printer name in this format “printername, winspool, portname” (HP OfficeJet 4500, winspool, Ne00). If you did not find this key then you need to create as per the same instruction. 

 “Word could not create the work file”

“Outlook could not create the work file”

“Could not create temp environment variable OR Check the temp environment variable”

Solution 1:

  1. Removed all the temporary file, Internet temporary file, from computer.
  2.  Open internet properties using inetcpl.cpl command, select General Tab open setting under Browser history.
  3. Select “Move folder” and change the location of Internet temporary folder or set as default (c:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files.).
  4. Close the internet properties window and restart the computer.

Solution 2:

  1. Open “RUN” windows and type “regedit” command and click OK to open registry editor. Navigate the registry subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
  2. Select the Cache in right panel and type the following command (%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files) in the Value data box and click OK
  3. Close the registry editor and restart the computer.
